The European Commission's latest agri-food trade monitor shows the EU exported EUR 138.7 billion of agri-food products in January-July 2026, down 1% on the same period in 2025. The decline was driven almost entirely by pigmeat: pork exports fell EUR 930 million (-13%) on lower prices and smaller volumes to China, Japan, the Philippines and the UK.
Poultry moved the other way. Imports of poultry and eggs into the EU rose EUR 250 million (+14%), while poultry and egg exports increased only modestly - a sign that European demand for imported poultry protein stayed firm even as the bloc's own sales softened.
For buyers and suppliers of frozen poultry, the message is that European demand for imported poultry and egg products is still expanding even as the wider EU trade balance shifts away from pork. Origins that can meet EU animal-health, residue and certification requirements keep finding room in the market - and the same discipline on documentation and cold-chain handling is what keeps product moving into the Gulf and Africa.
